A hundred years ago, the Delaware River Viaduct connected New York City railroads with the bucolic, river hamlet of Delaware Water Gap.

There were huge, wooden resort hotels. Teddy Roosevelt and a very young Fred Astaire hung out there -- probably not together.

Before air conditioning, city folks used to spend summers like that.

During the 1930s, the suddenly unprofitable hotels burned. The automobile offered folks other places to keep cool.

And, the railroad doesn't run there anymore anyway.

The town is less flashy now. The Appalachian Trail passes through. Jazz musicians from the big town buy country places here, and have a festival.

And, though the paint is peeling here and there, it's still very cool.

    The disused viaduct still stands.

It's still the largest single-pour concrete thing ever. But, now, it's really just a place Where folks get high and paint graffiti.

And, they do both pretty well.

I'm told that graffiti comforts the disturbed, and disturbs the comfortable.
